Podcast Episode 81 – Part A

We here at the DG Podcast hope that you had a merry Christmas. Our present to you this year was posting the podcast a few days late. You’re welcome. We know how much it hurts you to try to process the intellectual content from one of our podcasts so we decided to post the podcast late so you could rest your little grey cells. Have you sufficiently rested them by consuming mass amounts of Christmas cookies, candies, and assorted other fattening snacks?

This being our post Christmas podcast we talk about some of the gifts we received this year. Jason is going to be talking about Borderlands again. This time it will be about the Pre-Sequel. Rhett will be talking about Dark Souls, but this time about Dark Souls 2, and Lindsay will be talking about her cape/scarf combo. Jason also explains the real reason behind the delay of the podcast and computer issues that he had over the weekend.

Jumping into the emails, we have two from Chance. He had time to write two emails because the podcast was a bit late. He relates how his Christmas was spent i.e. putting together his son’s toys and enjoying his own. He also bags on us for talking about the Hobbit. To be fair, we do talk about the Hobbit/the Lord of the Rings quite a bit, but he is a Green Lantern fan.

In this week’s news dump you will be thrilled to hear about the following:

  • The Interview is now streaming
  • Hackers had nothing better to do on Christmas
  • GTA introduced lethal snowballs
  • Modded Hobbit sword
  • E-sports in the Olympics
  • and a missing airliner

It was a bit light on the news this week, but we still talked about ourselves (the important bit), made fun of our fan, and gave you the news that you need to know.

Podcast Episode 80 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Welcome to another episode of the DG Podcast. In our own indefatiguable style we are churning out more spectacular internet entertainment for you Philistines. That’s right, I called you Philistines. If the shoe fits…

This is an extra special episode and we are dedicating it to our superfan, Chance. We know that he is such a huge fan of the Hobbit an the Lord of the Rings that he just can’t get enough of listening to us go on and on about how much we like Tolkien’s work. So, Chance here’s a big thanks and a suck it to you.

Before we get into the heavy discussion, we talk a little about some of the things that we have been doing. Rhett has been acting as tech support for his family. In this capacity he has managed to fix his sister’s computer and singlehandedly take down his home network. That is tech talent on a grand scale and they are getting it for free. Jason has been reading the Guardians of the Galaxy. He was surprised by the reaction to Howard the Duck at the end of the movie and there was absolutely no reaction to Cosmo. Cosmo is a member of the Guardians and a very powerful telepath. He also happens to be dog.

Once we get the niceties out of the way we get into the meat of the episode, the Hobbit: the Battle of Five Armies. This is then final episode in the saga that has become the Hobbit. I say saga because the Lord of the Rings spans three books and three movies. The Hobbit spans one book and three movies. Peter Jackson decided that he was a better story teller than Tolkien and that for whatever season had to embellish an already excellent story. We explore what we liked, the action, the pacing, the actors, etc. We also discuss what we hated about the movie, the additions, the embellishments, and the changes. At the end of e day, the Battle of Five Armies was probably the best of the three, but it still wasn’t the Hobbit.

Finally, we determine the winner of our next bracket, Tequila Then versus Dirty Harry. Tequila Yuen is a cop from the John Woo film Hard Boiled. He is agile and determined, a definite obstacle for Dirty Harry. Dirty Harry is the hardest cop in American cinema. He is so hard the bad guys surrender just so Harry will stop glaring at them. We determine the outcome of this fight by die roll. In the next match Mad Max faces off against Martin Riggs. They’re both crazy so you have something to look forward to.

Podcast Episode 80 – Part A

The DG Podcast has returned for yet another amazing episode. Not that you cretins will understand or appreciate the effort with which we painstakingly craft each episode. We pour our blood, sweat, and tears into each and every episode… well, we would if Rhett and Jason were capable of such depth of emotion. Since they aren’t, we’ll just pretend.

Chance sent us another great email and we also received a response from Lindsey Stirling’s representative. After we talked about her on the show Jason sent an email to find out if she was a gamer or if she just enjoyed the music, and we got a response. So, back to Chance.

In his email he says that our previous show wasn’t about games and gaming. And he is correct. However, this isn’t strictly a gaming podcast, just a geeky podcast featuring two gamers and occasionally, Lindsay. Jason enjoys trivia and what could be more trivial than the lawsuits we discussed on the show? He also shares a story from his personal experience about the law and liability. We let him rant about the legal system and we agree. After that he talks about the various iterations of Windows and how much they sucked by comparison to other version. He talks about cloud based storage and our need for physical copies of our software. Then we jump to Iron Spider-man, Civil War, and Marvel trying to recover their IPs. He continues on with nerd bullies and agrees with Lindsay’s viewpoint, expressed on last week’s show. He asks us for a brief overview of pencil and paper RPGs. Sides with Frank Martin in the beatdown and signs off by wishing Rhett a “tolerably average Christmas experience”.

This week in the news dump we mostly focus on the Sony snafu.

  • The Ghostbusters movie is a go
  • Sony was hacked
    • High level contact details were taken
    • Emails were leaked
    • Attack traced to North Korea
    • NSA confirms nation’s safety
    • Attack linked to Seth Rogan/James Franco movie
    • 9/11 style attacks threatened
    • Theatres refuse to show film
    • President Obama speaks against Sony
    • Sony blames theatres for pulling the release
    • Steve Carrell movie canceled
    • When movie is released we recommend that every patriotic American see the film
    • We can’t let the terrorists win

Also during this podcast we talk a little about the Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, Dungeons and Dragons, Septerra Core, and more

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 80 – Part A

Podcast Episode 79 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Our society is doomed. Why, you ask, is society doomed? I will tell you, whether you want to know or not. You! That’s right society is doomed because of you. How does that make you feel to know that you will be the cause of the downfall of our civilization? If it makes you feel important, stop it. The scourge of civilization is not something to be esteemed or sought after. You should be shunned like the pariah you are. You sicken me, you really do. On a lighter note here’s the new episode of the podcast.

This new episode finds Rhett dealing with more computer issues. Dealing with Windows 8 isn’t easy. Microsoft has never made its products easy to use. It forces Rhett to make reference to his red behind. Why can’t computer issues be easy to solve. He also recounts the issues that he has been having with his cooling system. He received the parts he needed to upgrade his computer, but now he is having trouble with his cooling system. Every step forward he takes, he needs to take a step back.

Jason then brings up an article that he had read in the newspaper recently. A student died on USU campus after running into a slackline. Turns out that the parents filed suit against the students responsible, several university employees, and the university itself. So we talk about lawsuits that should have been thrown out as soon as they were filed. These lawsuits include the broken cookie, drunken drowning by seat belt, spilling hot coffee, and more.

At the end of the show we debate who would win between Casey Ryback from the Under Siege movies and Frank Martin from the Transporter series. Casey is a naval cook, but he was a former SEAL. Frank Martin is the transporter. He drives people and things from point A to point B. He is also former special forces. Bottom line, both men are extremely dangerous. In the next round, Tequila Yuen faces off against Dirty Harry.

We finish out the show talking about Christopher Lee being a former member of the special forces during World War II, DC Comics cartoons, and the various actors that have portrayed James Bond.

Podcast Episode 79 – Part A

The DG Podcast is returning. No matter how much apathy is directed our way we persevere. Either we are determined or insane. We think we are determined, and you can keep your opinions to yourselves.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a listener email today. Chance just bought a house and so he has the stress of the holidays on top of the stress of moving. We wish him luck because Jason doesn’t have anything to do if he doesn’t send emails.

We talk a little about our week and what we are playing. Right before recording the show we were playing Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition. Lindsay had never played a pencil and paper RPG before so we broke out the book and ran an encounter. We talk a little about playing RPGs and how one of our groups broke down because of a misunderstanding with the rules and how we had to kill one of the other players so that we could survive and encounter. It was a bad group dynamic.

Rolling into the news dump there were quite a few good items this week.

  • Funding for That Dragon Cancer
  • Are video games art?
  • Xbone Vs PS4
  • Call of Duty sales
  • Microsoft Windows 10 and gaming
  • Marvel, Sony, and Spider-man
  • Steam holiday auction problems
  • Nerd are now the bullies
  • Small Pox History video game funding

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 79 – Part A

Podcast Episode 78 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

What going on out there in internet land? If you are tuning in here, it can’t be much. It is obvious to everyone how desperately starved for entertainment you really are. At the very least we hope that your holidays don’t suck. Which means that you should probably sit back and let the more competent people tell you what you should stop screwing up.

We have a great show for you. Well great by our standards, which should fill you with pity and disdain. Rhett and Jason chat for a bit about how he ordered the wrong processor, people coming back after you thought they were gone for good, and how much grumpy cat is worth. The figure will surprise and sicken you.

Jason then moves on to the new announcement from Marvel – Benedict Cumberbatch is the new Sorcerer Supreme. That’s right they have finally announced who is going to be playing Stephen Strange. We then discuss the rumors that have been swirling about on the internet around the movie. There were a number of rumors such as the movie will not be an origin story, it may follow the Lords of Shamballa storyline, Baron Mordo and Dormammu might be in the movies, the various actors that were attached to the project at one point or another, etc. There are some hints that this could be a good movie. This may be a difficult sell if this isn’t any origin story. We figure they need to his the supernatural hard and stick to it. Stay away from the superhero angle and focus on Dr. Strange saving the universe in an anonymous manner. We briefly touch on the new AKA Jessica Jones and the Daredevil series that are being developed for Netflix. That leads us into talking about powerful female characters that might make for a good movie and the announcements about the new Fantastic Four movie.

We spend so much time talking about the announcements from Marvel that we don’t have a lot of time for Rhett’s topic. However, we return to the Star Wars trailer for a few minutes. There has been quite a bit of controversy around it. This time the controversy has been around John Boyega’s character. Evidently people have been questioning the legitimacy of a black stormtrooper. They have been falling back on the clonetroopers and not seeing that for all we know every clonetrooper was replaced. We don’t know. They always wear helmets. Plus is someone comes to the empire to enlist they aren’t going to turn them away.

Finally we finish up with the next match in our tournament. This match features John McClane versus Indiana Jones. John McClane is the New York cop from the Die Hard movies. John McClane is a scrapper. He makes the best of any situation he’s thrown into. He fights hard and keeps fighting until he wins. If you don’t know who Indiana Jones is I feel pity for you. You should probably skip Kingdom of the Crytal Skull, but go find an Indiana Jones movie and get educated. Jones have some of the same qualities as McClane. He gets knocked down and gets up again and keeps fighting until the last enemy is down. He also fights smart, using the environment to his advantage and the like. Next week’s match will be Casey Ryback from the Under Siege movies versus Frank Martin from the Transporter series.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 78 – Part B

Podcast Episode 78 – Part A

Salutations of felicitous occurrences denizens of the internet. And for the less enlightened, Happy Holidays internet public. We are back for another episode of the DG Podcast. There were some technical difficulties with the show while we were recording and it made the show better. That’s right, better.

Chance, once again, has sent a great email for your listening pleasure. We talk briefly about buffet style restaurants and how you get what you pay for. Then he comes down on us for not getting the podcast out on time. He then rants a little about Black Friday, an entity that needs to be crushed, and how brick and mortar stores need to change their business models to compete with the internet. He tells us about the house that he and his wife are buying (sounds nice). He says that he’s glad Jason came around a bit on Lzzy Hale and talks about meeting her and Amy Lee. He loves his wife, which we can see from what he has written about her. Then he asks about our opinions on games like Amiibo and Disney Infinity. Unfortunately, we don’t have much to offer so your opinions would be welcome. He counsels Rhett to find a job as a bouncer and laments that he is going to be working forced overtime.

There is quite a bit to cover this week in the news dump so we roll right along.

Podcast Episode 77 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

As Dante expresses in his Divine Comedy, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.” That’s right it’s time for another episode of the DG Podcast. I don’t know about any of the rest of you, but when I start dealing with computers I find that abandoning all hope is my default mode of operation. Then I start thinking about the you and I realize that there was no hope to begin with and I was foolish to think otherwise.

We had a few technical difficulties with the last episode. Evidently Rhett’s hard drive was full and failed to record the last ten minutes of the previous part. He had to edit everything down and record a new ending. He also had a very good Thanksgiving. He had two banquets one with his family and then a second one with his girlfriends family. Then when he was trying to fix the previous part he had two pieces of pie.

So, in this episode Jason makes up for his disparaging remarks about Lzzy Hale. In a church meeting he attended Lindsey Stirling was mentioned. She was putting on a live internet concert for young people. Having never heard of her before he went home and looked her up online. Lindsey Stirling is a very talented violinist with a nerdy background. Check out some of her videos here: Dragon Age, Skyrim, Legend of Zelda, Shatter Me, Lord of the Rings, Halo. We can’t say just how much of a geek she really is, but she may be a gamer girl if her musical selection is anything to go by.

When Rhett takes over the conversation we talk about Black Friday. Black Friday has a rather negative connotation in the minds of many people. We talk about the deaths and injuries, the origins of the name, when it started, etc.

Afterward we take a brief break to talk about the new Star Wars trailer. There’s a new faux trailer that gives the trailer the George Lucas re-edit treatment. Every scene re-edited and embellished. We also discuss the lightsaber…the lightsaber (shakes head).

And last but least, we give you the battle of the…well, it can’t be century, it isn’t that important. So, it will have to be the battle of the minute, that sounds right. We have Andrew Scott from Universal Soldier vs John Matrix from Commando. Andrew Scott, played by Dolph Lundgren, is strong, fast, and heals quickly at the cost of overheating. John Matrix is quick witted, strong, fast, and a dead shot with any firearm even on rapid fire. The next round of our tournament will feature John McClane versus Indiana Jones.
