Podcast Episode 77 – Part A

I would like to welcome you Troglodytes back to the DG Podcast. We open the show a little different today. We start with a discussion on some new movie trailers that have been released recently. We talk about Star Wars VII, Jurassic World, and Pan. We have high hopes for these movies and while the trailers for two of them prove intriguing the third falls flat.

Chance made sure to send us an email even though he was suffering from the post Thanksgiving turkey coma, or in his case a pizza coma. He had the opportunity to eat both turkey and ham and doesn’t like either. So he makes frozen pizza for his Thanksgiving dinner. He skipped the Black Friday sales (he has my respect and envy). He comments on the state of feminism, he had to get out the Christmas tree and check the box for spiders. He says that Lindsay brings an air of sophistication to the show. He agrees with Miyamoto about the game libraries for the Xbone and the PS4 being boring. He asks about our opinion on the new Star Wars Trailer., which we gave earlier. He also touts his wife’s skill at making coconut cream pie, and defends his naked hot chick army.

Part of the reason for the other intro is that the news is a bit light this week.

  • 343 apologizes for Halo problems
  • USC creates game to teach how to apply for college
  • Dark Souls 2 comes to Xbone and PS4
  • CCP games shuts down fan created Vampire the Masquerade game
  • Activision issues take down notices for videos that show how to exploit bugs and glitches
  • Kim Kardashian’s game will donate money to AIDS charity
  • 20 year old Boston man sentenced in attempted murder in London

Podcast Episode 76 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Coming to you from the dark heart of the internet (the place where blogs go to die) is another episode of the DG podcast. We have lovingly crafted this episode with you our loyal fan in mind. Of course, the less we talk about your mind the better (didn’t you mother ever tell you to clean up that gutter?).

First off, we welcome Lindsay back to the show. She lends a certain something to our show…class, that’s it. Rhett decides to take the opportunity to get a woman’s perspective on many of the topics that we discuss on the show. We get her opinions on women in games and comics, cosplay, women nerds and dating. Lindsay admits that she is socially awkward enough that she can’t tell if guys are flirting with her and Jason tells her that if a nerdy guy tries to talk to her, he’s flirting (Rhett agrees). We talk about guilds in online games and more.

We talk about some of the new developments at Marvel. We talk about

  • the characters getting their own comic lines
  • New Avengers time is running out
  • a new planet for the Guardians of the Galaxy
  • new developments with the Weapon X program
  • Marvel has a douchebag quota
  • Deadpool novel (we cringe)
  • Deadpool for PETA
  • new event in the Spider Verse
  • Nightcrawler vs Sabretooth
  • Avengers the B or even D-Team
  • Fantastic Four get a new uniform (who cares)
  • Moon Knight gets psychiatric help
  • etc

Finally the moment you have all been dreading since the podcast started – John Rambo versus Jason Bourne. John Rambo is a special forces trained soldier and a bit shell shocked to go with it. Jason Bourne is a highly trained spy and assassin who is also a bit shell shocked as a result of his traumatic training and missions. In the next round of our tournament we will see Andrew Scott from Universal Soldier versus John Matrix from Commando.

Podcast Episode 76 – Part A

Welcome back to another stunning episode of the DG Podcast. Back in ancient times you would have had to pay through the nose for entertainment of this caliber. You ingrates just don’t understand what it is that you are getting. The internet is making you believe that you are entitled to our labors. Well…if you have a good argument I might listen. I’m not promising anything. On with episode 76 part b.

A big thanks to Chance for the email today. Chance is the reigning king of the email on the DG Podcast. Admittedly this is a rather shallow accomplishment and would be given quite freely to anyone who sends an email. Chance has been teasing his wife with her Christmas present, maiming his laptop, confessing to his wife that he cheated on her in his dreams and missing his favorite band in concert, coming up with new afflictions for Rogue Legacy, planning a murder spree at AT&T, laughing at the folks who price matched the WII U at Wal-Mart (he was laughing at Wal-Mart), and wasting time at work.

I can’t say that this week is any better for news than last week, but here we go.

  • Ubisoft is addressing the Assassin’s Creed: Unity fiasco
  • Huffington Post released an article about sexism in video games
  • A group in Sweden is creating a ratings scheme for gender equality in video games
  • Shadow of Mordor has new DLC
  • Alamagordo is selling the Atari 2600 cartridges found in the desert
  • Sony boss is against online harassment
  • Miyamoto says non Nintendo games are boring
  • New Zealand is unhappy with developers skirting their ratings system
  • Elite: Dangerous dumps offline mode
  • G4 officially shutdown
  • Angry Birds Go has 107 million downloads
  • GTA V 1st person mode making people upset
  • EA not releasing Dragon Age: Inquisition in India
  • Senate fails to pass freedom act
  • EA CFO says Microsoft with catch up with Sony
  • Former French presidential candidate – Assassin’s Creed: Unity is propaganda
  • Final Fantasy IV servers targeted by DDOS
  • WOW expansion subscribers up to 10 million
  • NSA to get water cut off by Utah
  • New Peanuts movie trailer

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 76 – Part A

Podcast Episode 75 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

When Obi Wan said “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy” he wasn’t really talking about Mos Eisley spaceport. No, he was really talking about the internet. He’d just had his identity stolen by a Muunilinst “prince” in a inheritance scam on the internet. If you are geeky enough to pick up on the previous references then congratulations, you are a big nerd.

This is episode 75 – part B and it is quite good even if we say it ourselves. The episode opens with us discussing our recent reading and gaming choices. Jason is rereading the Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury. It is an excellent book about Halloween. Eight boys go on an adventure to rescue their friend who was stolen by Death and they learn about the origins of Halloween. Rhett has been reading Warhammer books and playing Rogue Legacy. The Warhammer books are adventurous and darkly humorous. They make for good reading. Rogue Legacy is a sidescroller with a hint of Dark Souls thrown in.

We then visit the dark side of game development for a few minutes. Turns out that maybe Ubisoft knew about the problems with Assassin’s Creed Unity before launch. If they didn’t there are a whole string of coincidences that practically add up to divine intercession. So, either Ubisoft conspired to make Assassin’s Creed Unity look better than it is, or a benign or malevolent being is looking out for them.

On a lighter note we talk about fighting games. Yes, that is the lighter note. I won’t get knifed in a dark alley for talking about fighting games. The same cannot be said if I keep talking about what Ubisoft may or may not have done with Unity.

Back to fighting games. We all have an opinion about fighting games. We like some, we hate others. There are so many fighting games that you can almost say that at least one will appeal to your sensibilities. We talk about some of the history, some of the ones we like, what we like about them, what we don’t like about them, what we don’t like about them, and our favorite characters. We talk about famous franchises like Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs Capcom, Soul Calibur, and Injustice.

As usual, we finish the podcast with the next round in our tournament, James Bond, quintessential British spy, versus Ashley “Ash” Williams, deadite killer and chainsaw master. James Bond is a highly trained and skilled spy and assassin. He is armed with an array of deadly gadgets, is highly resourceful, and incredibly suave (that won’t help him win, it’s just a fact). Ash, on the other hand, learned quite quickly to be deadly. If he hadn’t he’d be dead. He is clever, resourceful, and the master of the quip (again, that won’t help him win, it’s just a fact). In the next round of the tournament you will get to see Jason Bourne take on John Rambo. Let us know who you think would win.

Podcast Episode 75 – Part A

It the history of the internet, which is time immemorial, there has nothing been so important to your future prosperity as this podcast episode (this actually goes for all of our podcasts). If, for whatever reason, you do not agree, that’s okay our target audience is intelligent people.

Rhett and Jason talk a little about their week so far. Jason bought a new computer for his family at the university surplus. He spent $7.50 on it. The only problem was that the computer had Linux on it. He explains why this was a bad thing in the podcast. He also had is garage door break this weekend, so karma is balanced. Rhett has been suffering through a cold, which hasn’t really improved his disposition.

We received two emails from Chance this week. He ended up having a tooth extracted and was heavily medicated while writing the first one. Unfortunately, he wasn’t medicated enough as the email was thoughtful and coherent. In his email he confesses that he hasn’t read or watched Dune. He comments on a family photo that Jason’s wife posted on Facebook. Reveals his contempt of Best Buy (the store that can’t handle informed consumers), and his holiday plans for his wife. His boss is quitting after 14 years of working where Chance works. This is cause for consternation. Chance didn’t really like his boss, but he was familiar.

Unfortunately for you the news dump is rather pitiful this week.

  • Assassin’s Creed Unity & Rogue came out – full of bugs
  • More new games are riddled with bugs at launch
  • Master Chief Collection is buggy on multiplayer
  • Intel and Gamasutra continue commercial relationship
  • Crowdfunding for Gamergate review site

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 75 – Part A

Podcast Episode 74 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

We now return you to your regularly scheduled insanity. We know what you want and we know where you go for your entertainment…youtube or something similar. You ungrateful slobs. Why we should slave away to provide you with such an abundance of internet gold, I don’t know. However, we will persevere in our endeavor until you appreciate us.

How to describe tonight’s show? The show tonight is a rather strange affair, we are still recording the show at Rhett’s place. What is it sometimes about books and movies. Sometimes books are so good that we can’t wait to have them turned into a movie. We hope and pray that when the movie comes out it will be just like it was in our heads. Sometimes we get something better than we expected, sometimes we get something completely different, and other times we get complete and utter garbage. For instance, back in the 80’s a studio tried to make the novel Dune into a movie. What we got was the weirding way and witching modules. We got heart plugs and rats attached to cats. We got a movie that the director was so ashamed of that he wouldn’t let them put his name on it. We also got Robinson Crusoe a movie that was much better than the boring book upon which it is based. There are also times when we get a movie that is well done, exciting, has good momentum, but is still disappointing to say the least.

At the end of the podcast we finally remember who was supposed to fight in our tournament (Jason didn’t have the information in front of him). This round of fighting sees Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction fighting against the Mariner from Waterworld. Jules Winnfield is a tough as nails hitman. He’s so tough even his wallet says so. The Mariner is part man part fish. He’s strong (if you think swimmers are weak look at Michael Phelps). He’s also smart, smart enough to hide in plain site. The next round of our tournament: James Bond versus Ashley Williams. James Bond the epitome of British spies and Ashley “Ash” Williams the chainsaw toting, shotgun wielding, deadite killer.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 74 – Part B

Podcast Episode 74 – Part A

Here we are for episode 74 part A. We keep dishing out the gold to you the indifferent internet public. It’s rather like casting pearls before swine in our opinion. So, why do we keep doing it. Maybe we are insane (kudos if you get the reference). Maybe we are hoping to create an intellectual renaissance in the internet to raise it’s collective intelligence a few points. Maybe we just like doing it. Whatever the case may be enjoy.

This week Rhett and Jason are mixing things up a little this weekend. Jason was invited to a social activity and so we pushed back the podcast. In addition, Rhett and Jason are recording the podcast in the same room for the first time in the podcast history. They take turns playing Injustice: Gods Among Us while the other takes care of business.

In our email from Chance we find out just how starved for entertainment the guy really is what with the rhyming and not shaving for November. It turns out that he is also only a closet nerd. That’s right a closet nerd. It turns out that he’s a sports fan. We also discuss attaching “Gate” to the end of controversies. Chance has some interesting ideas on different suffixes. Plus, he destroyed his child’s Halloween. That is probably going to take years of therapy, my friend, years of therapy, or a free bag of candy whichever comes first.

Rhett then takes over and finishes the show with the news dump. All the nerd news that is fit to repeat. And who is the arbiter of what is fit to repeat: Rhett. Don’t even bother to argue.

Podcast Episode 73 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

What can we say in the face of so much internet indifference? We are back with episode 73 part B. That’s right despite the glaring apathy we have created a new episode for your listening. I would say pleasure, but that would be a lie. I know it is a pleasure for us, but I can’t think what you might be getting out of this deal. You make me sick.

Okay, well this show is really a Rhett show. Jason did have a topic for discussion that wasn’t Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit related (you’re welcome Chance), but we don’t get to it this time (oh, well). Rhett’s topic is a show in itself. We talk about bullying, being an outcast, gamergate, kids not caring about getting their video games taken away and much more. We’ve spent quite a bit of time on gamergate and how the people involved are really terrible people. This is something that really gets up Rhett’s nose. There’s quite a bit wrong with the whole situation, ostracism, bullying, and becoming what you once despised.

Enough with the ranting, we end the podcast in our usual way, by setting up a ridiculous fight scenario. This week we have Ethan Hunt, operative for IMF from the Mission Impossible movies, versus MacGyver a special agent working for the Phoenix Organization. Ethan Hunt is highly trained in weapons and unarmed combat. He is intelligent and improvises well. MacGyver is also very highly trained, intelligent, and improvises even better than Hunt. For our next match-up we pit Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction against Mariner from Waterworld.

Podcast Episode 73 – Part A

Happy Halloween, you freaks. Isn’t it wonderful that every year we set aside a day just for you. We in America believe in ridicule for all and acclaim to none. The United States is a place where you can be an idiot, just as nature indended, and you will be ridiculed and scorned for it. That’s democracy in actions, you animals.

You will be listening to this podcast after the fact, but we talk about Halloween and some of the various experiences that we had tonight before we launch into the main event. And what a main event it is. Chance sent an email (thanks man) and we had fun with it. He tells us how he felt about having Lindsay on the show. Where he stands on costumes and cosplay. He also talks about scary movies (Jaws 2 really freaked him out) and how he feels about the current offerings. We briefly visit scary video games (there are a few) and his top all-time favorites. We move on to the price drop from Microsoft and Xbone, modding a Wii, and #killauntmay.

Rhett delivers the goods with the news dump conveying a withering amount of geek news and commentary to your ears. Oh yeah, and Jason screws up everything.
