Podcast Episode 72 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Yes! We just made it, episode 72 part B is published. That’s right, we made it and with time to spare. I don’t care what you say, we made it on time. We said that we would get the podcast out today and today it is. What can I say? When we make a promise we keep it.

This is a somewhat special episode. One, it is our semi-Halloween episode and two, we have a guest host: Lindsay. Rhett invited his girlfriend to give her two bits on some of our topics under discussion.

Jason starts us off with some appropriate Halloween topics. In Provo, Utah there is a haunted house called the Haunted Castle. It was great, it was scary, and it was opened from 1971 till 1997. Find out why is was closed. We also discussed the difference between American horror movies and horror movies from other countries. The difference between shock horror and genuinely scary horror movies.

Of course Rhett weighs in on all of the discussions, but Lindsay takes his spot and talks cosplay. Cosplay isn’t Rhett’s favorite topic. In fact he has expressed his opinion on cosplay and isn’t reticent about it in the slightest. However, Lindsay is a cosplayer and has designed and built her own costumes. She tells us what she thinks about the current trends in cosplay.

We then close the episode by discussing B.A. Baracus versus Lara Croft. Baracus is a member of the A-
Team. He is special forces trained and is the strong man of the group, let’s just say the B.A. in his name doesn’t stand for “Bad Attitude” for nothing. Lara Croft is the Tomb Raider. She is mostly self-trained and spends her time stealing antiquities to sell to the highest bidder. Next week you can look forward to a rousing discussion on Ethan Hunt versus MacGyver.

What do we have to do to you people to make you get the hint? We think that your intelligence is substandard. You couldn’t win a beauty pageant even if the only other contestants were Freddy Krueger, Jason, and Mike Myers. You have the morals of a used car salesman. Your personal hygiene would make a pig blush. I could continue, but if you are still here we might as well continue with the podcast.

We realize that it has been a while, but Chance just got around to the Hate Speech episode. The episode inspired him to check out the story behind Zoe Quinn and he came to the same conclusion that we did, she is a terrible person. In addition, the entire feminism movement isn’t so much about promoting women as it is about tearing men down. We also have some Skyrim, Robotech, and collectible figurines. Also if you are interested check out Sideshow Collectibles.

Tonight in the news dump you can look forward to the following and more:

  • Reality TV on the decline

The internet is a wonderful place. Everyone can enter and there is no minimum height requirement. Unfortunately there isn’t a minimum IQ requirement. You must be this smart to comment on this forum. Should cut down on the trolls.

Jason starts the podcast with a personal experience with Comcast, one of the most evil companies in the world. Then he goes into tonight’s topic: celebrities that are comic fans. Evidently the actors in the new spate of superhero movies aren’t fans. Tobey Maguire had never even read a Spider-man comic before being cast. We talk about Nick Cage, Robin Williams, Megan Fox, Mila Kunis, Vin Diesel, and more. These celebrities are ones that know their stuff, at least within certain bounds.

Rhett then goes off on the internet backlash around the Bayonetta 2 reviews. Bayonetta 2 has been highly well received by most of the internet critics. However, one critic had the gall to give a poor rating to the game driving down the metacritic score. He was evidently offended by the blatant sexuality of Bayonetta 2. The internet howled foul. Rhett points out the problems with the internet reactions.

In the next round of our tournament we have a showdown between Joseph Dredd and Snake Plissken. Judge Dredd is the law. He was genetically engineered to be the perfect judge. He is physically and mentally superior regular people. He is also well armored and armed with the typical judges armor and the Lawgiver a superior firearm capable of firing several types of ammo. Snake Plissken is a one-eyed beast. He is the tough guy’s tough guy. He dresses in dark leather, is proficient with several different firearms. He isn’t afraid of anyone and will kill anyone who attempts to get in his way.

In the next round of our tournament we find B.A. Baracus facing Lara Croft. B.A. Baracus is a member of the A-Team and is their strong man and a mechanical genius. Lara Croft is also called the tomb raider. She is athletic and skilled with a variety of weapons.

Podcast Episode 71 – Part A

You have returned to the black hole of the internet. The power of our gravitational pull is sucking you back into the darkest corner of the internet. However, while we are powerful enough to extinguish all laughter we aren’t powerful enough to get pull in listeners.

This week we return to form by starting with our listener email. We had to rearrange things for the last couple of episode because life intruded. Chance demands that we remedy the situation. He also plugs the new Flash show and the developments on the Walking Dead. Rhett thinks that the return of Carol may change things for Darryl and Beth. Winter Soldier is better than the first Captain America. Days of Future Past is okay. Dollar movie theatres are a good deal. The Civil War story line was a big “screw you” to comic fans, and is the reason behind our #killauntmay campaign. Penance was Speedball not Super Ball. The Robocop/Shaft showdown was a forgone conclusion. We appreciated the email and the corrections.

Lindsay has Rhett read a bit on cosplay. Lindsay is a cosplayer and has created several costumes. She read an article that is blaming the current economic slump for an increase in cosplay and cosplayers. If you think about this logically, a hobby that can cost hundreds of dollars is on the rise because the economy is slow. We don’t have enough to eat or to live on, but we have enough to spend on expensive costumes. Sharp thinking there people. We are of the opinion that cosplay is a form of escapism and that people who have the requisite income and time. They get away from their dreary lives and get be someone more exciting.

We have quite a bit in the news dump that really raises our nerd hackles.

  • Google Nexus 6 is enormous
  • Ubisoft might have been pressured by Microsoft to downgrade Unity
  • SOE Associate Art director passed away
  • FGC player collapsed in tournament, later died
  • Indie crowd funded campaign to pressure Valve to release Half-Life 3
  • Anita Sarkesian cancels USU lecture because of concealed weapons
  • Active video games no better than traditional video games
  • Hatred ultraviolent video game released
  • Jefferson Parrish men stole credit cards to buy video games
  • Melbourne murder trial focuses on Call of Duty
  • Finnish prime minister blames Apple for economic difficulties
  • France introduces law to allow 2 year trial period for employees
  • WII U EULA doesn’t provide disagree option
  • Gog.com has no contact with Hatred developer
  • Worcester, MA tried to bar Comcast from setting up shop

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

What can I say we are back. I would apologize, but then I would have to be sorry. We would also have to be wrong and that is one of the great things about the internet, shout loud enough and plug your ears you don’t have to face the truth. Isn’t the internet great?

In a departure from our normal routine we start with the listener email. Usually we do the listener email on our Saturday show. However, we are doing it today because Jason. That’s all you need to know. We talk about binge TV watching and how that effects our perception of the shows we watch. Chance expected us to dissect the new show Gotham. He does like the new Alfred. He disagrees with Rhett on the whole Darryl/Beth situation from Walking Dead. The whole Ubisoft issue does feel like a dick move for all the owners of the PS4. Also, James Earl Jones is doing new lines for Vader for the new Star Wars movie, could be good, could be bad. Also, Ghostbusters 3. It’s going to be awful. It will be called Ghostbusters, but it won’t be.

Rhett takes over and introduces the topics he wants to discuss: cosplay and Robert Downey Jr/Marvel. The topics aren’t combine there isn’t a weird Robert Downey Jr/Marvel/cosplay thing going on. Rhett has come to the conclusion that cosplay has been so overdone that it now drives him up the wall every time he hears about cosplay. Comic cons used to about more than cosplay now they seem to focus on it almost exclusively.

In other news Robert Downey Jr has reached an agreement with Marvel to portray Ironman/Tony Stark in the upcoming Captain America 3. Evidently his contract wouldn’t allow him to continue to appear as Tony Stark without getting more money. We hope that this isn’t just celebrity greed. We wonder how many people out there would jump at the chance to be in a Marvel movie at a fraction of the price paid to these celebrities.

Finally as we end the show we return to our tournament for the showdown between John Shaft and Robocop. John Shaft is a tough New York City private investigator/cop. He is a good shot, but much of his menace comes from his presence. He exudes power and danger. Robocop is menacing by appearance alone. His programming makes him a crack shot with any firearm. Plus his armor makes him quite difficult to harm. In the next round of the tournament you we will discuss Joseph Dredd versus Snake Plissken. Joseph Dredd is Judge Dredd from the comics and movies. He was portrayed by Sylvester Stallone and Karl Urban. Snake Plissken is from the movies Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. and was portrayed by Kurt Russell.

Jason, because everything is his fault, wasn’t able to do the podcast at the normal time, so we did it early. This means that, while you can look forward to the normal witty banter, we don’t have a listener email this time, we are going to save it though and do that particular segment in the next show.

Podcast Episode 69 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Hello to all the losers, trolls, geeks and weirdos out there on the internet. We are here with part B of episode 69. We have a great show for you today. What changed, you may ask yourself. What can I say? We can’t always dwell in the shadows of mediocrity. Sometimes the subject matter just pulls you into the light. We certainly didn’t plan it this way and we will return the the comfort of the shadows for the next episode. We will definitely try not to startle you like that again.

Now usually Rhett opens the episode. Jason is the nominal host of the episode. It is his job to introduce the show, watch the clock, keep everything moving, and then end the show. However, he leads of with a discussion of the new show Gotham. In case you haven’t heard, Gotham is a new show about Gotham City that centers on Jim Gordon before he became the commissioner of the GCPD. You won’t be seeing Batman in the show because Bruce Wayne is too young to have completed his training. What you are going to see is how Gotham became the place that needed the Batman with nods to the Batman continuity along the way. In the first episode we are introduced to Selina Kyle (Catwoman) as a teenager, Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Oswald Cobblepot (the Penguin), Edward Nygma (the Riddler), Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, Poison Ivy (as a little girl), Carmine Falcone, Detectives Montoya and Allen, a possible Joker (the comedian at Fish Mooney’s club), and several others. Can you see why Rhett and Jason have reservations about this series? The show is constantly dropping references to Batman, reminding us that Gotham is about Batman, but there will be no Batman. What is the first thing you think of when you think Gotham City? You think Batman. You may have some favorite supporting characters, but no one reads Batman comics for the supporting characters. They read them for one simple reason: Batman. Rhett and Jason draw parallels between Gotham and Agents of Shield. Agents of Shield has the same problem. Set in the Marvel Universe, one watches the show for a glimpse of the superheroes from Marvel, a glimpse that will never come.

Don’t get us wrong there are several things about the show that are well done. The atmosphere is appropriately brooding and dark. The GCPD is drowning in corruption. Jim Gordon is shown as one of the few honest police officers in the GCPD. The Penguin is creepy and shows hints of his ambitions to become a crime kingpin. Edward Nygma is arrogantly superior, while not actually being as smart as he thinks he is. Selina Kyle is a thief that likes cats. However, none of this changes the fact that we are going to be looking for Batman and will be disappointed when he never shows. That is why Rhett and Jason are rather pessimistic about the show: Gotham is a Batman show without Batman.

In tonights bout in the Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes – Guns Edition we have Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon versus Jericho Jackson from Action Jackson. Martin Riggs is an LA homicide cop who is somewhat unhinged. He was trained by the army special forces as an assassin. He is a martial arts expert and a crack shot. Jericho “Action” Jackson is a high school sports star, Harvard Law graduate, and Detroit cop. Jackson is a very strong and capable fighter as well as an excellent shot. Then next bout in the battle will be between Robocop and John Shaft, from the movie Shaft.

Podcast Episode 69 – Part A

We are back for another episode of the podcast, episode 69. Please put away your implements of suicide. You no longer need your notes, guns, or poisons. We have returned to provide you with the will to go on living. This is just another of the services that we provide. Welcome to the internet.

This week in our listener email we have possible arrest, fighting against the man, reaction on Blizzard cancelling Titan, old-school gaming, sexism, anti-sexism, racism, white privilege, school cops, defying the principal, and more. Chance got into it with the principal for confiscating his son’s phone and had the school cop called on him. So, there was no danger whatsoever. There are some sexist T-shirts out there with the internet backlash making them more popular than they should be.

Rhett goes through the news, unfortunately there isn’t a great deal of news this week:

  • Google is being sued by naked celebrities
  • Alien Isolation is actually good
  • Adam Sandler is doing 4 movies for Netflix
  • Zombieland is getting a sequel
  • Battlefield Hardline will work on opening day
  • Windows 10 announced
  • Shadow of Mordor is getting good reviews
  • Disney cancelled 2 Star Wars games
  • Creator of Call of Duty:Black Ops – Soldiers should be in schools
  • Hackers using Reddit to create Botnet for Macs
  • 15 year old spends $46381.90 cents on virtual gold
  • Ueno Royal Museum holding Attack on Titan exhibition
  • Industry angry at Verizon actions
  • Wonder Boy developer applying for bankruptcy
  • Twitch changes policy on sponsored content
  • Valve updates curator system
  • Senator Ron Wyden to host ‘The Impact of Mass Surveillance on the Digital Economy’ Roundtable
  • 2 million copies of State of Decay sold
  • Kickstarter donations down
  • Rovio cuts its workforce

And the goodness doesn’t end there.

Podcast Episode 68 – Part B

Legendary Battle of the Action Heroes - Guns Edition

Happy Hate Speech Day you losers! That’s right, we finally got around to it. It was Jason’s job to stay on top of it, but what can we say? It’s Jason. We blame everything on him. We blame everything on him, that’s our excuse and you can’t use it. So, what’s your excuse?

Rhett opens the podcast with the reason that we are promoting Hate Speech Day. We have the right to say what we want no matter what others might think. We are free to express our opinions whether they are wrong or right. However, there are people on the internet who are trying to limit our freedom of speech. That’s right Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian we are looking at you. Your conduct on the internet has been appalling to say the least. Forcing people to take down content because you disagree or because it is detrimental to you, shame on you. We enjoy the freedom of speech in this country and you are in the public eye. If you don’t want the attention you should have thought of that beforehand. It’s too late to back out now.

Jason then brings the hate on Peter Jackson and a little for George Lucas, but mostly Peter “Why Is He A Director” Jackson. If you have listened to the podcast before you know that Rhett and Jason are both fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J R R Tolkien, and were looking forward to seeing them adapted to film. However, Peter Jackson has ruined everything. He has taken wonderful stories by a gifted writer and turned them into Hollywood crap. He did better with the Lord of the Rings, sticking closer to the author’s vision probably because he was constrained to just three films, but there were still problems. Then along comes The Hobbit and Peter Jackson adds the albino orc, the white council being the UN of Middle Earth, Beorn being a slave and rather a depressed man, the female elf, the romance between the elf and the dwarf, the connection to Mordor, the Morgul poison, Elrond trying to stop Thorin and company, the racial diversity of the Lakemen. The list could go on, I have more. Bilbo becoming an action hero, Bard as a smuggler and boatman, the inclusion of Legolas and Radagast the Brown. The hate for Lucas is all because of the Midichlorians. That’s right, those cursed Midichlorians. What happened to the force being a mystical energy that connected all life in the galaxy? George and Peter, shame on you both.

We let things run a little long, but we do get to the next round in our tournament El Mariachi versus Harry Callahan. El Mariachi is from the Mexico Trilogy he is introduced in the film El Mariachi where he was an aspiring Mariachi guitarist. He became more worthy of his inclusion in this tournament in the movie Desperado. He carries a guitar case full of guns and knows how to use them. He is rather flashy as a gunman. Harry Callahan is from the movie Dirty Harry. He is a tough as nails San Francisco cop known for carrying a .44 Magnum, “the most powerful handgun in the world”. In the next round be pit Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon against Jericho Jackson from Action Jackson.
