Podcast Episode 59

Rhett and Jason finally put aside their personal live to create another podcast episode for you. We hope that you feel suitably blessed. We slave away over these hot microphones pouring our blood sweat and tears into this endeavor all for your enjoyment. If you don’t feel blessed then you can feel free to take Rhett’s advice. If you don’t know what his advice is you haven’t been listening to the podcast.

Seeing as this is throwback episode we hurry through the listener email (sorry Chance, Jason gives you a more thorough snarkectomy than usual). We rehash a few things from last week as per usual. Chance more than validates our opinions. Basically, since we have internet validation, if you don’t agree with us you are wrong. So we talk about earning money from other peoples’ work, immigration (though only briefly, so don’t get excited), video game reporting both audio and video, a couple of podcasts you might be interested in (Dark Angels and Pretty Freaks and Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History), don’t play Divinity II Ego Draconus, guy plays against dad’s ghost on Rally Sport Challenge, and the fact that we can’t stand Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga (big surprise).

Rhett takes over and we talk about Comic-Con. We will go into greater detail later this week, but Comic-Con may be in trouble and may have to rethink their model, maybe get back to their roots. Originally, Comic-Con was all about comics. Now there is more non-comic related items on the agenda than comic related. This year one of the big reveals was the new trailer for Mad Max and while it is an exciting bit of news it is not related to Comic-Con.

Jason takes a look at the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that is coming out next month. This was brought on by his wife who was surprise and disturbed by the new look given to the turtles. The news that a new turtles movie was in the works was taken, at least initially, as good news by both podcasters. However, the news that Michael Bay would direct and early news that the turtles might be aliens has us sincerely doubting that this movie will be good.

We also talk about Game of Thrones and how George R R Martin in a terrible writer and that the show itself if terrible. Hate us if you like, we would be glad of the email. Here is the Glove and Boots video that was mentioned.

On the docket for tonight’s battle royale we deviate from the past pitting of hated celebrities and tonight we have Cinderella versus Snow White. Who would win. They are both toughened by the wicked stepmothers and manual labor. And just to remind you how distracted we can get, we come up with a better movie concept than Snow White and the Huntsman during this discussion.

Substitute Episode

Welcome back to the podcast. This is going to be a substitute episode. We are trying something new, plus we are going to be a bit busy this weekend with our personal lives. What this means for you our horde of adoring fan, is that we have decided to play Borderlands 2 and shoot the breeze. True to our nature we this is a DG Podcast video. We play Borderlands 2 and talk about whatever pops into our mind.

During this video you will hear Rhett and Jason playing and trying to keep the conversation going. Jason is playing as Axton the Commando, and is the one that keeps missing and soaks up the damage. Rhett is playing as Gaige the Mechromancer, and is the one with the sniper rifle that keeps saving Jason’s digitized butt. Whether you like it or not we hope to do more videos like it in the future, so you better like it.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Substitute Episode

Podcast Episode 58 – Part 2

Here it is again hump day. The work week is halfway over and we are one step closer the end of our pathetic lives. What can I say? I know how the world works. Very few of us do anything of real import in our lives. Most of us just waste our time. Well, to make your time more enjoyable we have a new episode for you. You’re welcome.

Rhett, always the one to sniff out controversy and conspiracy, brings to our attention the change in reporting that has been taking place in the video game industry. Once game sites would review games and they would at least fake their impartiality. Now, we have gaming companies that pay people to play their games. Is this ethical? Is this correct? Is this a good change? Are we supposed to just accept this new reporting practice? Should the people involved report that they are being paid? What are your thoughts?

On a lighter note Jason talks about Reasons to Fear Canada. That’s right, reasons to fear Canada. Here we are in the United States with one of the most polite countries in the world just hanging there right over us. They have to be up to something. That and their obsession with doughnuts, hockey, and Scotch-plaid hats with the ear flaps.

We then end the podcast with our traditional fight to the death. We are sticking with our current theme of letting dirtbags fight dirtbags. Tonight in the arena we have Lady Gaga versus Miley Cyrus. Here we have two train wrecks that have gone out of their way to prove that they no longer have a squeaky clean image. Go ahead think about it, Miley Cyrus used to be an actor for the Disney channel, how squeaky clean can you get. Then do a search for Lady Gaga before she went crazy. She was actually attractive at one point.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 58 – Part 2

Podcast Episode 58 – Part 1

It’s the end of the week and time for episode 58 part 1. Another hour of listening to two white guys snark about the idiocy that is so rampant in the United States. We will also poke fun of anything else we find idiotic. We try not to discriminate in these matters.

Chance had quite a bit to say this week. He heard about the Thor announcement. If you haven’t heard, we discuss exactly what we think about the new Thor, Captain America, Archie announcements. He also discusses his feelings about ereaders, the douchebag trying to make is his daughter a princess, sex in literature, Xbone sales double (there should be no surprise there), and we may have a new idea for our next fighting tournament.

As for the news dump there is quite a few items, but we spent a little too much time on the email and we rush through the news items. AT&T supports the ban of fast lanes with conditions, the Morning Joe show on MSNBC is full of idiots (check the video), Xbone sales increase/PS4 still winning, Microsoft lays off 18,000 employees (most from Nokia), Xbox Entertainment closed, ESPN to broadcast DOTA2 championship, Yogcast Kickstarter falls apart, Spanish court lifts file sharing block, Verizon warns FCC against reclassification of broadband carriers, Sims 2 support to end, bill proposed to stop FCC interfering with states, ACLU finally joins suit against government spying, porn site offers to sponsor e-sports, Microsoft is working on a new version of the Xbone, Doom 4 is a reboot, are League of Legends and other Free-to-Play games dying off.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 58 – Part 1

Podcast Episode 57 – Part 2

Well, here we are episode 57 part 2, and another week almost completed. What have you done this week to justify your existence? I’m going with nothing, not for me of course I can justify my existence, I’m talking about you. Oh well, you probably won’t be doing anything for the rest of the week either so you may as well listen to the podcast, give a little extra justification to our lives if you can do so to your own.

Jason opens the show by discussing some books he just finished reading. The series was set in a fantasy world, swords and sorcery type stuff. The first book was good, the second not so much, and the third not even as good as the second. There are still two more books in the series and he doesn’t think he will get to those. What makes these books conversation worthy is a quirk of the content. There are frequent sex scenes that interrupt the flow of the story and make you wonder what the author was thinking. Then you find out who the publisher is (no spoiler here, listen to the podcast).

Rhett then brings up this guy. A father who is even now creating a spoiled princess. What is this message sending to his daughter? That daddy will give her whatever whim floats into her head. Want to be a princess? Sure. Want to be queen next? Sure. Next thing you know this guy will be trying conquer the world because his daughter isn’t going to be satisfied with being the princess of a pile of dirt and rocks in Africa. Now this is an extreme example, but it is indicative of the idiocy going on in the US where we think that we have to give stuff to our kids. Sure we have to give them food, clothing, love, and shelter, but we shouldn’t be giving them iPods, gaming systems, or other toys as a substitute for affection. That kind of thing leads to people thinking that the world owes them a living, that they should have free things like internet and health care. It is turning our kids into complete tools and leading the Democrats to thinking that the Health Care Reform Act is a good thing.

Jason then tones things down a bit with a discussion on a video he found on YouTube. The Top 10 Video Games that Need a Movie Adaptation. On this list we have Halo 4, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Mass Effect, The Legend of Zelda (shouldn’t it be the Legend of Link?), Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed II, Spec Ops: The Line, BioShock, Chrono Trigger, and Portal 2. Our discussion revolves around these video games and why we think that they should or shouldn’t have a movie. Some complications arise from the fact that these IPs already have a loyal fanbase and as such are much like comic or book adaptations, ie. the fans will cry foul if you don’t treat the material properly (I’m looking at you Peter Jackson).

Finally, we debate who would win in a fight between two of the biggest celebrity dirtbags: Shia LaBeouf versus Kanye West. On the part of Shia LaBeouf, Jason thinks he looks like a wet noodle and wouldn’t have the strength to deliver a beatdown, but he and Rhett agree that he is crazy and that may lend him the necessary strength. Kanye on the other hand is the bigger dirtbag. He would cheat every opportunity that he could get. However, Rhett feels that everything about Kanye is fake and it could be that he would fall apart in the face of a man so crazy that he thought that a homeless man had stolen his hat.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 57 – Part 2

Podcast Episode 57 – Part 1

Welcome to episode 57 denizens of the internet. Here’s the DG Podcast for another episode of geekery, heavily laden with ranting. You know that you people want a good ranting diatribe that rails against all that is stupid, both on and offline. So, on with the show.

We open the show with a little banter before getting to the email. We start with who we would kill off from comics if we could vote. We have the likes of Squirrel Girl, Aquaman, and Cyclops. We also talk a little about the Ultimate Marvel Universe. You should check it out if you haven’t.

In our listener email (Chance is still king), Chance is experience retail worker rage. Don’t go postal on us Chance, that would be lethally stupid. Chance talks about classic cars, how to pick up girls at Wal-Mart (for all you Romeos out there), disappoints his father-in-law, wishes for a time machine (obligatory 80’s reference), shows us he knows more than is healthy about Willem Dafoe and Jim Caviezel, admits he plays video games once for the story, and advises Rhett on how to get a new Xbox 360 (his method involves getting married, it gets a little complicated).

In our news dump we cover quite a bit of stupidity gold and other nerd news. Sony considers early access for the Playstation. There’s a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer out, (I feel that Michael Bay owes us an apologize for the dubstep). PC gaming hardware market is worth billions. Apple CEO has been getting backlash from twitter for not allowing a woman to engrave inappropriate comments on her new iPad. Kim Kardashian has a new iOS game that could bring in $200 million dollars this year (if you need a slap for purchasing this trash let us know). President of Blizzard says that they will be creating more diverse and inclusive characters in future games. Americans would rather be cannibals than be racist (I weep for Americans). Millenials want smaller leaner governments that provides more services (can they be any dumber?). Apple informs on Google to the FTC (what a bunch of pansies). There is now a journalism game simulator in the works (where will it stop? prison barber simulator?). Listen to the podcast for the rest of the news dump.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 57 – Part 1

Podcast Episode 56 – Part 2

It is Wednesday again and time for part 2 of episode 56. What a useless day, Wednesday. It is in the middle of the week. It is too far from the weekend and not far enough. Its not like you can do anything about it either. You can just have to listen to the podcast and hope that it improves your day even a little.

We start off with a short discussion on classic cars. We have one of the biggest classic car shows in the US. However, both of us realize that while it is nice to look at these cars, we realize that they have no practical use whatsoever.

Rhett leads off our nerdy of the episode with a discussion on survival games. He feels that games have been focusing lately on survival or at least on adding survival aspects to games. The Forest for instance has aspects of both survival and resource management. We have the Forest, DayZ, and several others.

Jason ends the nerdy section with a discussion on the Batman Vs. Superman movie. We go through several pros and cons that could make or break the movie. The heroes involved, the villains, the antagonism between Batman and Superman, the cameos, etc. all of these could make or break the movie. We are skeptically optimistic.

Finally, we discuss who would win in a fight. We have reverted to our previous format since the tournament is over. We now have Willem Dafoe versus Jim Caviezel. Let us know who you think would win.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 56 – Part 2

Podcast Episode 56 – Part 1

Happy 4th of July to all you listeners in internet land. I realize that you will be listening the day after and we aren’t really know for our patriotism, but we hope that you had a good time and that you blew something up for our country. If I sound facetious, check out John Adams, Rhett’s hero and a founding father, he said that we should celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks. It is our duty to show our support and pride in our country by lighting the fuse and watching the explosion.

Our listener email is rather short today. We don’t blame you Chance (it’s all Jason’s fault), there was a quite a bit to do today: barbeques, fireworks, parades, etc. He was surprised by the outcome of our tournament. I can’t say that we were expecting things to turn out the way that they did. We are going to mention again Dark Angels and Pretty Freaks, Chance is liking what he hears. He appreciated our wedding gift to him. He promised us a picture. We’ll post it when we get it. He’s been having fun playing Divinity II Ego Draconus and he looks forward to playing Gotham City Imposters.

In the news dump we have several fascinating topics to cover. A Tokyo science museum has just opened an exhibit on poo…yes, on poo. Thus continuing the oriental fascination with excrement and toilets. Here’s the proof. A fake Steam site was opened to scam users of logins and passwords. College players can receive royalties if their image is used in a video game (we say screw them, pay the school for the team name and then create fictional players). Amazon refuses to comply with the settlement plan for microtransactions (good for them, parents should be more responsible). Women are going to now be competing against men in eSports. Airtight Games is closing. Dungeon Keeper cannot advertise as free-to-play since it uses microtransactions. Lindsay Lohan is suing Rockstar Games for allegedly using her likeness in GTA V (we think the character is supposed to be generic, attention seeking blonde, not Lindsay). Riot Games shuts down public chat for League of Legends. Ubisoft found not guilty in DRM suit. Redbox video game rentals are driving sales. Toxic gamers are good for games, which is counter-intuitive and most-likely false. A new Robotech series has been announced, funding for the series will be raised on Kickstarter. Yahoo! saves Community. All the original cast has signed on for season 6 which will be shown on Yahoo!. Facebook shows how evil they truly are. They have been experimenting on their users without their knowledge. They decided to see if emotions could be contagious in online communities. The gist is that negative posts increase negativity and positive posts increase positivity. I don’t know who developed their research protocol, but it is extremely unethical to experiment on someone without their knowledge. You should check out the Tuskegee experiments for examples of what not to do when conducting research. In a bit of good news the president of Rockstar Games bought a church for a community. It sounds funny, but he bought the church to benefit the community.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 56 – Part 1

Podcast Episode 55 – Part 2

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Here we are on another wonderful Wednesday. And what you may ask is so wonderful about it. Well, its Wednesday and you have another episode of the DG Podcast. That’s right you junkies your fix is in. Taste the goodness and comeback on the weekend when you’ll get more.

Rhett calls to our attention the Moms Against Gaming twitter account which may or may not be a trolling account. If it is a trolling account, someone out there is laughing at you idiots for responding to his tweets. If it isn’t a trolling account, then you idiot gamers are just that idiots. We are calling you out on your atrocious behavior. You are basically proving their point for them. We have to be above this. So, from now on we want our podcast to be a place where you can express any opinion, where we can unite but still be individuals. We may have a commonality around gaming, but we still have our own opinions. We may not always agree on everything, but we should be able to express our opinions without the necessity of conforming to the expectations of society.

Jason then attempts to lighten the mood with Looney Tunes. He was recently reminded of his favorite Looney Tunes episode. The episode is called Rabbit Fire. In this cartoon Daffy Duck keeps trying to get Elmer Fudd to shoot Bugs Bunny, but through trickery Bugs keeps getting Elmer to shoot Daffy. At the end of the cartoon Bugs and Daffy find out that it isn’t rabbit season, nor is it duck season, it is Elmer season and they go off hunting him. The episode isn’t on Youtube, though you can find clips of it, so I found it and posted it. This cartoon is part of a trilogy with Rabbit Seasoning and Duck! Rabbit, Duck!. After we talk about this cartoon, we get into a discussion of propaganda from World War II. How did we end up there? We are the distracted gamers and you will just have to listen to find out.

And finally the moment you have all been waiting for, Norrin Radd, The Silver Surfer versus Superman, the Man of Steel. We put it off to give people a chance to respond and we go more responses than we ever have, three. Kind of depressing, but we appreciate the comments. Lindsay points out the Surfer’s vast array of powers that have almost no limit against Superman’s strength, speed, stamina, etc and comes down in favor of the Surfer. Chance points out that the Surfer is faster than Superman, can manipulate energy to rob Superman of his powers, and that while Superman is powerful, he just isn’t in the Surfer’s class. Neil C from the Dark Angels and Pretty Freaks podcast points out that Silver Surfer could slam into Superman going light speed and while Superman is strong, the beatings would eventually do him in. And there you have it Superman falls to the Silver Surfer. The tournament is over. We will post the entire bracket over at the forum and let you debate what should have happened. Now we return you to your regularly scheduled geek out. Check back with us on the weekend to find out what we are doing next.
