Podcast Episode 42 – part 1

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Here we are back for episode 42. We have quite a bit to cover on tonight’s episode. We have listener email, updates to the site, our news dump, and a new outro to debut (debut is a weird word).

We start by responding to Chance’s email. We will respond to other listener mail, as soon as we get any. Instead of sending us an audio file as he did last time, he went back to normal email. However, we installed a new plugin on the site that allows for listener to send us voicemail messages. All you need is a microphone and the site plugin takes care of the rest. Chance had some great comments about VR, animated shorts on the internet, free speech, etc. However, we did de-snarkify him, all for the benefit of the listening public.

There is quite a bit in the news dump tonight. Disney acquires the company in charge of Douchiepie. Hopefully, Disney will silence him. I’m not holding out too much hope on that one. Leland Yee, a senator from California, who has been a crusader against violent video games and guns has been arrested and charged with gun-running. Evidently there has been a huge nerd backlash against this guy for his hypocrisy. To get the rest of the news listen to the podcast.

Podcast Episode 41 – part 2

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Welcome to episode 41 part 2 of the DG podcast. We hope that you are enjoying the new site and the forum. This is being prepared in advance so we don’t know what the impact, if any, there will be.

In the first segment of tonight’s episode, Jason relates that he saw a new short called Paperman by Disney. It is a very touching and sweet. He and Rhett then talk about the many animated shorts that are available on YouTube. You can find the cartoons that the boy in Heavy Rain is watching during the game. Rhett and Jason mention the dueling, steampunk mechs, Brain Divided. There are some seriously well made cartoons on YouTube.

Rhett then rants about a YouTube personality that we are now calling “DouchyPie”. We aren’t going to link to his channel because we don’t want to perpetuate his stupidity. Anyway Rhett commented on Twitter that he was an idiot and was blocked by one of our Twitter followers. The basis for his rant is that the first amendment protects our speech. We DouchyPie has a right to be an idiot on YouTube and we have a right to despise him for his idiocy and his followers need to understand that.

We finally call the fight between Lobo and Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. We were hoping that Chance would get back to us on his hero, but we had to call it without his input.

Moving on we have Doomsday versus Batman in next week’s battle royale in our Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends tournament. We have opened a topic in the forum for discussing next week’s battle. Let us know what you think.

Podcast Episode 41 – part 1

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Welcome to episode 41 of the DG podcast. We have had an eventful week. We got a new website and a forum. The forum was down for a while, but it is up again. Jason put up the blog and transferred everything over to the new site. He also put up the forum which was separate, then took it down and put up a new one that was connected. The new forum will use the same login as the blog to simplify things.

We have a special treat tonight, Chance reads his own email. He sent his email in an audio file so we couldn’t change, abbreviate, censor, or paraphrase him. So you get to hear his voice on the podcast tonight.

In the news we have a kid from Norway who is now in a coma from marathon gaming and slamming energy drinks. Evidently if you drink too many energy drinks your kidney shut down. The United States will no longer be running the internet. They are going to turn everything over to the international community. I guess the US thought they were doing a great job on world peace and should regulate the internet. The next installment of Assassin’s Creed will take place in France during the French Revolution. The NSA can now record a full month of phone calls from everyone in the nation. And the Pirate Bay has form a political party and is trying to get their founder elected to parliament.

Podcast Episode 40 – part 2

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Here we are back again for part 2 of episode 40. We have quite a bit to talk about tonight from Edgar Allan Poe to who is going to win in tonight’s Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends.

Rhett starts off talking about Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann is an anime series about giant mechs, the power of the human spirit and believing in yourself. This isn’t unique, but there are some unique implementations of the various anime trope. So far he is enjoying the series, but not without reservations. We discuss for a time some things that have started out as impressive or enjoyable, but turned to ashes for us. One thing that disappointed Jason is the Wheel of Time series. He got quite a ways into the series, but stopped because he came to hate the characters. For Rhett, Bleach ended up as a disappointment.

Jason has been reading Edgar Allan Poe recently. He has read various stories by Poe over the years and has decided to read the collected works to see Poe is worth the hype. So far he has been impressed with the writing style and the diversity. Poe wasn’t just a horror writer. We then talk some of our favorite Poe stories. Be sure to check out The Cask of Amantillado, very good and very creepy.

In tonight’s Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends we have Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) the Emerald Knight versus Lobo, the Main Man. Hal Jordan is one of the strongest of the Green Lantern’s and as a Lantern wields one of the green power rings. Lobo is the last of the Csarnians, he killed them all for a high school science project. After reading a breakdown of their powers (for Green Lantern check Link1 and Link2, for Lobo check Link1 and Link2), we initially both side with Lobo. However, for a final decision we decide to let Chance defend his boy, Green Lantern and will make the final call next week.

That is the podcast for tonight. Let us know what you think and tune in midway through next week to get part 2.

Podcast Episode 40 part 1

Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends

Tonight we continue with our new format. We read Chance’s email and we go through the week’s news in the news dump. We will continue with the new format until we either get bored or decide to do something else. We did get a little feedback on the new format. It was mostly positive, so there you go.

In his abbreviated email Chance, has several things to say after we give him his weekly snarkectomy. He sides with us on the Wonder Woman/Ironman fight. He brings up some excellent Xbox games, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. Both games have excellent stories and are quite enjoyable. He brings up that you can buy used copies of games for only a few dollars more than is being charged to rent them on the Playstation Now. He says that he is disappointed with Titanfall and says that paying a $1 to get kicked in the nuts is preferable to paying for Mech Assault Online. He also gets us back on the VR helmet discussion. Both Sony and Valve are working on VR helmets. With all the development, we still don’t think that VR headsets are going to be mainstream for a while.

On the news dump tonight we talk about the controller for Amazon’s theoretical console. We talked about the NSA spying on everyone. We talked about how Stalin would have endorsed the Xbone and then kept a PS4 at home. Nvidia stopping support of DirectX 10. The Xbone controller works on PC. The Last of Us won 5 baftas. Epic and Mozilla demo Unreal Engine 4 running in Firefox, rather exciting gaming news. Chinese gaming console in the works. 22 year old Chimp plays better than kindergartners, and more.

That is the podcast for tonight. Let us know what you think and tune in midway through next week to get part 2.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 40 part 1

Podcast Episode 39 part 2

We continue with our new format on the podcast tonight. On the program we have the topics that are of interest to us, the hosts of the show. Plus, we have the next round in our Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends.

Rhett starts us out with the Walking Dead. He has been both watching the show and reading the comics that the show is based on. He makes the observation that this is a zombie apocalypse scenario and is doomed to end badly as per the formula. In this type of scenario where civilization has ended due to the rise of zombies things really only have one way to go, down. Before anything can improve you have to find a way to exterminate every zombie and exterminate the method for zombie propagation. He also points out some of the divergences between the TV show and the source material.

Jason again brings up the topic of VR headsets. He found an article about a new VR headset being offered by Valve. It seems that everyone is jumping on the headset bandwagon these days. And while we would like to experience the new technology we are hesitant to jump on the bandwagon ourselves. Right now the headsets are expensive, require cutting-edge computers to run, and can only accommodate one user. Altogether, not points in their favor. Right now if you buy a VR headset you are buying a very expensive peripheral. If the price becomes more reasonable, then we might endorse them, but not yet.

In the next round of our epic battle royale we pit Ironman against Wonder Woman. Ironman is Tony Stark’s superhero persona and is gifted with inventiveness, intelligence, money, increased strength, speed, repulsor blasts, flight, and other energy and projectile based weaponry. Wonder Woman is an Amazon warrior. She has super speed, super strength, durability, accelerated healing, superior combat skills, flight, magic sword, lasso, tiara, braclets. We pick our winner. Let us know who you picked.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 39 part 2

Podcast Episode 39 part 1

Tonight on the podcast we are experimenting with a new format. We are dividing our podcast into two parts. The first part, which will be posted tonight, will cover our fan email, our news dump, and any discussion on those topics. The second part will be released later in the week and will cover our personal topics of interest and the next round in the battle royale tournament. Let’s see how it works and if we like it.

In our email tonight, Chance rags on Rhett for letting Captain Marvel lose. He then praises Rhett for reading heavy material for fun. He blasts Apple for their handling of the man who’s mother left him her iPad in her will. The woman died of cancer and left the iPad to her son. The problem being that the device is locked and no one has the code. Understandably the man went to Apple, but they require written permission from the dead woman before they will help her son. Let me reiterate the operative words there, the dead woman. Chance also tells us that he would wear a VR headset, but would much rather have the full blown holo-deck. Rhett points out the obvious problem with the holo-deck, no man would ever leave his holo-deck, ever. He touches on the death of net neutrality and points out that our hope is now in the consumer, which means we are screwed. Chance also sent us an image that does us proud, take a look Keep Calm and Do Something Lethally Stupid

On the news dump tonight, we talk about Naughty Dog fired the writer of Uncharted and got tons of grief. Disney is fire a bunch of people. They bought Playdom and now they are ditching it because it isn’t profitable. Titanfall will not be released in South Africa because they don’t have the internet bandwidth to support it. So much for the always on Xbone. Comcast is still trying to screw over the consumer with their purchase of Time Warner. Verizon and Netflicks are negotiating for bandwidth, just like Netflicks did with Comcast. They are definitely going to pass the savings on to the consumer after these deals go through. The CEO of Sony Entertainment America, Jack Trenton, is stepping down. And much more.

That is the podcast for tonight. Let us know what you think and tune in midway through next week to get part 2.

The Distracted Gamers Podcast Episode 39 part 1

Podcast Episode 38

Tonight we have a treat for you: Our Longest Podcast Ever! That’s right, we go for the record. We hope that you can stand us long enough to listen to the podcast. Partially we have quite a bit to say about the Doctor Strange versus Captain Marvel fight.

We start out with our emails. We have two tonight, one from Chance and one from Vaughn, one vote for Captain Marvel and one for Doctor Strange. Yet another reason that we go the distance. Chance fills us in on the Xbone price drop wiht the addition of Titanfall, Sony’s VR headset, and the Harvard Business Professor’s opinion that game developers should develop preexisting IPs rather than develop new ones.

Rhett brings us tonight’s news dump. We talk about Bioshock Infinite again. Ken Levine wants people to stop making porn of Elizabeth. He’s forgotten internet rule 34. Netflicks is paying Comcast to be able to stream videos, which we’ve talked about before. However, Comcast is also talking about billing Cogent as well. Cogent is the company that handles the streaming for Netflicks. Expect your bill to go up if you use Netflicks. This runs smack against Net Neutrality and highlights why we should have it. Listen to the podcast for the rest.

We finish the console section with the final three: WII U, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. WII U is the console to get if you like party games, playing without the television, and unique games. If you don’t want an expensive, under powered, system, that is bulky and drains the battery skip it. The Playstation 4 has the best hardware of the bunch, it is cheaper than the Xbox One, they improved the controller, you can stream to your TV with the PS Vita. However, there really isn’t a huge draw to move away from your current system, at least not yet. In a plus/minus kind of situation there’s a huge library of games available with the instant collection, but you have to pay for Playstation Plus. Xbox One on the other hand has Titanfall, it is an all-in-one media system, and it has HDMI passthrough. However, it has the inferior hardware and is more expensive, again not much reason to move away from current gen yet, it requires that you have the Kinect, and to do anything more that just basic system operations you have to pay for a Gold membership. Call us crazy, but we feel that we are already paying for the games, the system, and the internet connection, why are you making us pay again?

Then we get into Rhett’s true feelings about coop games. Shocker, he doesn’t like them for some very specific reasons. They tend to be competitive and unbalanced. He points to Borderlands 2 as an example. As much fun as we had playing the game, it really isn’t structured well for coop. Experience is not shared and loot drops can be stolen. The game is structured to inject a false competitive element into what should be a cooperative experience.

Tonight in this round of the Battle Royale we have determined that this is the end. One contestant will succeed. We will not let this situation continue. We have an exhaustive discussion of the merits of Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. Jason perhaps simplifying his position too much and relying on a couple of Doctor Strange’s more powerful abilities rather and jumping straight to the conclusion rather than putting together a more coherent argument. Rhett arguing that the powers of Captain Marvel making him the equal of the gods whose powers he uses and therefore the winner of the this round. In the end we discover some interesting information about the two characters and finally declare a winner. Next week on the podcast we have Ironman versus Wonder Woman.
